Responsible Gambling
Gambling is meant to be entertainment. It should not come at the cost of rent, education, debt repayment, or relationships. This page is for anyone who is concerned about their own gambling, or about a family member's. Please use the resources here — early intervention works.
What is gambling disorder?
Gambling Disorder (ICD-11) describes a state where a person can no longer control their gambling and it produces significant impairment. Recognised internationally as a behavioural addiction with measurable changes in brain reward systems — not a question of "willpower." Online casinos and sportsbooks are 24/7 accessible and abstract money away from physical cash, both factors that increase risk relative to land-based gambling.
Self-check (LOST screening)
The LOST screening tool (recommended by the UK NHS) — answer for the past 12 months. Two or more yes answers suggests a problem; please speak to a clinician.
| Letter | Question |
|---|---|
| L | Have you tried to win back money you've Lost by gambling more on another day? |
| O | Have you lied to Other people about how much you gamble? |
| S | Have you Self-funded gambling beyond what you can afford to lose? |
| T | Have you needed to increase stakes to get the same level of Thrill (Tolerance)? |
LOST is a brief screener. SOGS-R and PGSI provide deeper assessment. Local 精神保健福祉センター centres and BeGambleAware affiliates can administer them.
Harm-reduction practices
1. Set both a money and a time budget
Your budget must be money you can lose without affecting living costs, rent, education, or debt repayment. The same applies to time: 30 minutes a day, weekends only — pick a rule and keep it.
2. Use the operator's self-limit features
Every operator listed on DrollWolf provides at least the following (terms vary by site):
- Deposit Limit — daily / weekly / monthly cap on deposits
- Loss Limit — cap on net loss in a window
- Wager Limit — cap per single bet
- Session Limit — cap per play session
- Cool-off — 24h–30d login pause
- Self-exclusion — 6 months to permanent account closure
How to enable each is in our review pages under "Responsible gambling tools."
3. Don't gamble while drinking, on substances, or sleep-deprived
Decision-making is impaired and limits get broken. The same goes for emotional extremes — wins, losses, anger, grief. Step away.
4. Stop chasing losses
Trying to "win it back" with another bet is the classic warning sign. Walk away after a loss. This single rule prevents most ruinous spirals.
5. Don't hide it
Tell someone — partner, friend, family — that you gamble and what concerns you. The first conversation doesn't have to be with a professional. Concealment makes the disorder worse, not the gambling itself.
For families and friends
If you're worried about a partner or family member, please do not pay off their debts and do not blame them. The most effective first move is to take care of yourself — family-support groups exist for exactly this reason.

Underage gambling
DrollWolf is for people 20 or older. Some operators permit 18+ in their jurisdictions, but we do not market to anyone under 20. Childhood exposure to gambling significantly increases addiction risk later in life. Parents and guardians: please use web filtering (Norton Family, etc.) on shared devices.
